1991and earlier use a cable driven mechanical speedometer. Check the gear on the transmission/transfer end of the speedometer cable. The Vehicle Speed Sensor on top of the rear differential is used only for the RABS brake system. There is another transmission/transfer case mounted VSS to provide speed input the computer (PCM).
